President John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger discipline in Ghana’s schools while honouring academic excellence at the 69th President’s Independence Day Awards.
The ceremony took place on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the Accra International Conference Centre. Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang attended, and a speech on behalf of President Mahama was delivered.
The President’s Independence Day Awards were established in 1993 to recognise students who excel in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). This year, 52 awardees from public and private schools across all 16 regions were honoured. The group included students with visual and hearing impairments.
In his address, President Mahama praised the students for their determination and excellence. He said they represent an important part of the country’s future.
He also warned against what he described as growing indiscipline in some schools. He cited examination malpractice, vandalism, and disrespect for authority as specific concerns.
“Prosperity is constructed by law-abiding citizens who understand that personal conduct has national repercussions,” the President said. He urged students to combine academic brilliance with good character.
Among the award winners were Asantewaa Theresah (Ahafo Region), Amoako Ferdinand (Bono Region), and Agyapong Leonard (Ashanti Region). Others included Forson Maurencia Amponsah, Kumi Isabella Afriyie, Acquah Kelly Essel, Arthur Elizabeth Esi, Agyei Mensah Kwadwo, and Henewaa Jennifer.
