The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has moved to reassure customers that its metering systems are accurate, following a wave of concerns from prepaid users about their bills.
In a statement on Wednesday, the company said all meters undergo rigorous testing and calibration before installation, in line with both national and international standards.
Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, the ECG’s General Manager for External Communications, confirmed that each meter is independently tested and certified by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) before being deployed. He described the company’s metering laboratory as “state-of-the-art” and comparable to leading facilities worldwide.
“Every meter… went through rigorous testing and calibration processes before installation,” Dr Ayiku said, emphasising that the company’s quality assurance regime conforms to approved standards.
However, he acknowledged that some customers may have legitimate concerns about their bills. The company has begun investigating all reported cases, following a directive from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition.
To boost transparency and public confidence, the ECG has formally asked the Ghana Standards Authority to independently select meters at random for testing, both in the laboratory and out in the field.
The results of this independent assessment will be included in a report to be submitted to the minister.
The ECG reiterated its commitment to “accountable and responsive service delivery” and appealed for customers’ cooperation while the investigations are ongoing.
