Ghana and Zambia have agreed to introduce visa free travel for their citizens, a move expected to make it easier for people to visit, do business, study, and build closer ties between the two countries. The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during President John Dramani Mahama’s three day state visit to Zambia.
According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, the visa waiver was one of the most important outcomes of the visit and featured prominently in the bilateral discussions. He said removing visa requirements will reduce long standing travel barriers and unlock fresh opportunities in trade, tourism, investment, and cultural exchange.
President Mahama arrived in Lusaka on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, and was received at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport by Zambia’s President, Hakainde Hichilema. Officials described the visit as part of efforts to deepen diplomatic relations, expand economic cooperation, and strengthen people to people connections.
Mr Ablakwa noted that the push for visa free movement was a direct priority from the President, and he expressed confidence that the policy will benefit a wide range of travellers, including students, businesspeople, tourists, and professionals. He added that the agreement marks a major step forward in Ghana Zambia relations and is expected to significantly improve mobility and cooperation going forward.
